A beloved local nonprofit theater and arts company is making sure young Houstonians get screen time — the right kind.

Creative Partners Hope that Stone and Steps invite families and children to “smart breaks“, a series of interactive arts videos for children on music, theater and dance lessons. The free event takes place on the lawn of The Gordy, the dazzling $35 million Stages venue (800 Rosine St.), at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 10. Interested persons can register on line.

Here, guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs and stretch out on the Brown Foundation lawn for screenings and for special appearances by the program’s stars Captain Hope and Mr. Zo. More fun includes lawn games and making friendship bracelets. Guests can enjoy food trucks and mocktails and bug juice (for the big kids in the crowd).

Just in time for back to school, smart breaks offers a digital arts library of 37 music, drama and dance lessons, all meant to inspire a child’s engagement and joy and for use by parents. at home or by teachers in the classroom.

Program creator Hope Stone (in partnership with Stages) notes in press materials that blending the arts and mindfulness helps inspire creative thinking and boost academic success.
