Happenstance Theater announces its first post-COVID production

Happenstance Theater to present its first post-Covid production Hubbub in a two-week limited engagement at the Baltimore Theater Project from Oct. 28 to Nov. 7.

Described as a post-apocalyptic comedy, Hubbub is a comedic and existential getaway inspired by images of refugees fleeing on foot, Edwardian laborers, cinematic treasures like Fellini’s La Strada and Bergman The seventh seal, and Samuel Beckett’s black comedy. In this imagined and clownish play, the eccentric troupe from Happenstance Theater travels over the precipice at the end of the world. Their room lights up the darkness like a firecracker. This timely show is aimed at audiences of all ages.

Hubbub lasts 70 minutes without intermission. The ensemble cast includes Gwen Grastorf, Mark Jaster, Sabrina Mandell, Sarah Olmsted Thomas and Alex Vernon.

Hubbub has been performed at the International Festival of Arts & Ideas, Staunton Music Festival, Celebration Barn, NextNOW Festival at Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Baltimore Theater Project, NY Clown Theater Festival in Brooklyn, Capital Fringe Festival, Reston CenterStage and St. Mary’s College. It was developed with a grant from the Morgan Fund and with support from the Share Fund.

On Theater of Happiness: Happenstance is a professional company engaged in the design, production and touring of original visual and poetic theater, created by performers. Our
the ensemble is made up of multi-talented performers who shape all aspects of our work
from concept to realization. We collect images from the past and re-contextualize them in
works that address the eternal themes of life and death. With the simplest means – humor,
music, silence, text and beauty – we seek to elevate the moment when performers
and the public meet, to elevate the encounter beyond the everyday and the pedestrian in the
realms of dreams, poetry and art. The meaning is often found by chance. In 2016, Happenstance received three Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding Ensemble,
Outstanding Costume Design and Outstanding Lead Actor. In 2017 Chance
received two Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding and Outstanding Costume Design
Musical direction.
