Profile

Mitsu Salmon creates original performance and visual works that merge several disciplines. She was born in the melting pot of Los Angeles to a Japanese-American mother and a Caucasian father. Its creation in different mediums, the translation from one medium to another, is related to the translation of different cultures and languages.

Salmon received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2014. In 2005, she
NYU graduate. She was a member of the Butoh, Ima Tenko and Kiraza company, in
Kyoto from 2008 to 2010.

She has lived in India, England, Germany, Amsterdam, Japan and Bali. She has presented work at venues including the Chicago Cultural Center, Highways, Performance Space 122, and internationally at Hebbel Am Uffer in Berlin, the London Performance Art Festival, and Urbanguild in Kyoto, Japan. She has participated in artist residencies at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei Artist Village, Guildhall, Indianapolis Museum of Art, and Oxbow. She received Newcity’s Best Multidisciplinary Collaborative Performance Award in 2015, an Individual Artist Fellowship from the City of Chicago, and a Touring Fellowship through Midwest Nexus in 2018. She was awarded the Chicago Dancemaker’s Forum Lab Grant, a Individual Artist Fellowship from the City of Chicago and the Utah Performing Arts Fellowship. She has presented research/performance at the Dance Studies Association Conference, the Northeast Modern Language Association and the Out of Site Flow Symposium.
