Lights, camera, KiKi Layne is back in action!

Although you might know the actress from her roles in movies like If Beale Street Could Talk and The old guard, Layne rediscovers the joys of performing at the theatre. She currently plays in About Sugarlandan off-Broadway production that will bow out on March 20.

“I haven’t been on stage since 2016 so I was worried about being on stage again after that time,” Layne exclusively shared with E! News. “You work different muscles when you’re doing a play, so I was nervous about being out of shape in a way. I had to remind myself that I actually have a lot more experience in theater than I did. in the movies. I just had to trust my gift.”

Directed by Whitney White, the play follows Sadie (Layne) as she calls on generations of matriarchal ancestors in search of the truth about her own mother. It was a role that immediately caught his attention.

“I was blown away by the language and the story telling this playwright Aleshea Harris gave my character and I was excited to dig into that language and the global journey that Sadie is going through,” Layne explained. “
