What is Solo: A Star Wars Story?
Centered on the titular smuggler, Solo: A Star Wars Story was the second of Lucasfilm’s anthology films set in the galaxy far, far away. The project explored Han’s early adventures and how he came to be involved in the underworld. Along the way, he encounters classic characters such as Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian. The film also introduced a number of new cast members who have become increasingly important to the universe, including Qi’ra, a mobster played by Emilia Clarke.
Solo: A Star Wars Story had a notoriously tumultuous production. Originally Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who are known for their work on titles such as 2014’s The Lego Movie, led the project. However, they were eventually fired from the project, with Ron Howard replacing them and directing numerous revivals. These helped bump the budget to between $275 million and $300 million, one of the highest for a film. However, Solo: A Star Wars Story only grossed just over $390 million at the worldwide box office, making it a major bombshell and Disney losing money on the project. Reviews for the project weren’t particularly strong, and the film holds a 69% on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, the film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
